“Nightmare Alley” is a psychological thriller by director Guillermo del Toro, adapted from William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 noir novel of the same name, which delves into an intriguing and dark world. When the charismatic but unfortunate Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) gets in the good graces of fortune teller Zeena (Toni Collette) and her ex-husband, mentalist Pete (David Strathairn), at a traveling amusement park, the door to success opens up: using his newly acquired skills he begins to outwit the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society.
With the unsuspecting Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to scam a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with help
of a mysterious psychiatrist, Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), who could become his most formidable opponent.
Cate Blanchett describes her character, psychiatrist Lilith Ritter, as “mysterious” and “unknowable”, with a “mythical” side; his distinctive yet elegantly understated appearance in the film underscores the inscrutable qualities of his character.
“For the character of Cate in Nightmare Alley, we were inspired by the wonderful actresses of the noir genre: Lauren Bacall, Veronica Lake, Ava Gardner and Barbara Stanwyck. I took into account the lighting and, of course, the make-up that was used in Hollywood at the time. The synthesis of glamor! ” says Morag Ross.
“Morag Ross is a true artist. His instinct for shade, tone and color is flawless and always inspiring when we get to work together on creating the character’s look. With Lilith, we focused everything on skin tone and a killer red mouth, ”says Cate Blanchett.
Nightmare Alley will be released in Italy on January 27, 2022.
